Shiatsu anma is a style of ancient oriental bodywork therapy based on traditional
Chinese medicine. Through kneading, pressure, and tapping techniques along the meridian channels, “qi” (the body’s vital energy) is either unblocked or brought into the areas of the body stimulating the body’s own natural healing powers. It is very rhythmic, working with your breathing to achieve a state of deep relaxation and balance where healing can occur.
Conditions for which Shiatsu’s therapeutic effects are particularly helpful are stress, fatigue, headaches, TMJ, fibromyalgia, neck, shoulder, and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, musculoskeletal pain, pregnancy, PMS, menstrual cramps, and digestive problems. Shiatsu is also a way for individuals to try traditional Chinese medicine without using acupuncture needles. The patient is fully clothed in loose comfortable clothing and no scents or oils are used. Occasionally, the practitioner may work directly on the abdomen, in which case, cornstarch will be applied to the skin. Socks are usually removed.
